Understanding Land Transportation

Land transport is the movement of goods via the ground, which includes by road, rail or pipeline. It differs from air or sea transport, which go, as the names suggest, by air (plane) or sea (ships). Transportation via land is a vital part of movement of goods and in connecting suppliers and customers with one another.

We will look at the different methods of land transportation, namely road (trucking), rail and pipeline. We will also look at what are the pros and cons of using each of these, as well as changes that are being made to improve and adapt them for better usage.

Different Types Of Land Freight Transportation

There are 3 different types of land transportation methods that we will look at which are:

Trucking

Trucking is a very popular transportation method for many businesses for various reasons. Some of the reasons include its efficiency in delivering goods, its versatility in being able to travel over sometimes tricky terrains to even some very remote locations. Trucking is quite efficient for taking a wide variety of cargo types and sizes over short to medium distances, providing a quick door-to-door delivery for many products. Trucks are able to travel over a wide range of different terrains, and as a result they are a good choice when wanting to take goods through or to very remote and rugged areas.

Trucking, however, does have its downfalls. One of the significant downsides is that it is susceptible to delays because of congestion and weather conditions. This can mean that delivery times are unpredictable depending on the circumstances on the road. The other downsides to trucking are to do with fuel. One is that the costs of transportation are entirely dependent on fuel costs, making transportation quite unpredictable when the global fuel prices are fluctuating, but also that their dependence on fuel means that they have a large environmental impact compared to other forms of transport.

There are some innovations in trucking that are taking place that aim to move road freight into a more environmentally friendly, safer and more efficient direction. To reduce the environmental impact of trucks that depend on fossil fuels, electric trucks are becoming increasingly more common. There are also changes developing in trucking to reduce human error and improved route efficiency through autonomous vehicles, and telematics and GPS tracking.

Rail

Rail transportation is a more environmentally-friendly and reliable form of transportation for heavy and bulky shipments than road freight, albeit less flexible because of infrastructural constraints. It is often the choice of transportation for big shipments such as mineral, coal and agricultural products as it is able to move these larger shipments in a more cost-effective way than if they were to be transported by road.

The main benefits of rail are the cost efficiency and environmental benefits, especially with larger shipments. However, it is also seen to be quite a reliable form of transportation as trains are not affected by traffic and weather conditions as trucking may be.

The downsides of rail transportation are that it is largely limited by infrastructure, which requires a very high initial cost, and can only be used as far as this is available. For most countries, railway networks are significantly less extensive than road networks. It is also much less flexible than road transportation because of its dependence on the infrastructure available, and cannot provide a door-to-door service.

Some of the research and development that is taking place with rail transportation includes the increasing speed of trains that is leading to reductions in delivery times, as well as in making increasingly more environmentally-friendly trains to reduce the impact on the environment by rail transportation.

Pipeline

Pipeline transportation is used exclusively for liquids and gases. It is a very efficient mode of transporting liquids and gases over long distances, and uses very little human involvement in the movement.

The main benefits to pipeline transportation are its efficiency in moving large quantities of liquids and gases over large distances, and that this can be done safely and in a cost-effective way because of the minimal operational costs and human involvement in the process.

The downsides include the limitation of what can be transported – which is only limited to liquids and gases – and that there is a very high initial cost involved in building and maintaining these pipelines. There is a concern for the environment in instances where there are leaks in the pipeline.

Most of the innovations around pipelines are technological, and are focussed on implementing sensors that detect leaks and the flow of the cargo. There are growing improvements in the materials used in the piping to reduce the risk of corrosion and leaks.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Land Freight Transportation

Transporting goods via land freight has several benefits:

  • Cost-Effective: It is often a more cost-effective option over sea and air transportation because of lower expenses in fuel, handling and packaging;
  • Accessibility: It can reach just about any location because of the extensive networks of roads and railway lines;
  • Convenience: the fact that trucks can travel over most terrains means that shipments can be collected and delivered almost anywhere by land as long as there is a railway line or a road. Door-to-door deliveries are possible and quite straightforward with land freight, resulting in a process that is smooth and simple.

However, there are some limitations and disadvantages to using land transportation which include:

Despite these disadvantages, there are growing innovations to try to reduce the negative impact of various land transportation methods. Some of these include developing trucks to have less of an impact on the environment, or developing route optimisation software that tracks the most efficient route in order to save time and costs as well as to improve predictability of delivery times.

Considerations For Different Types Of Freight

When you are wanting to do a shipment and trying to decide how to transport it, you need to consider a few factors in order for it to be transported safely and efficiently. One of the main things to consider is the type of shipment and whether it will need to have certain permits in order to be transported. The shipment types that may need to have special consideration with regards to this include special loads (heavy and oversized cargo, including machinery), dangerous goods, and perishable goods.

Land Transportation: Domestic vs International

When transporting goods you will need to consider whether you need to move the goods domestically or internationally. When transporting goods domestically – within a single country – trucks and trains tend to be more commonly used, whereas international shipments, especially over very large distances, will rely more on air and sea transportation.

Distance is one of the things to consider when choosing the method of transportation when shipping internationally or domestically. But it is also worth considering the regulatory differences and requirements between countries, documentation needed for customs control and clearance, the complexity of international shipping over domestic shipping, and the flexibility of the type of transportation used with regards to its adaptability to changes.
