1. Can you please share a bit of background information about your business?
Our business provides IT hardware, laptops, printers, smart boards, and desktops to various clients.
2. Which countries do you export to or import from?
We import and export to and from Dubai, China, UK and Zimbabwe.
3. When did you realise your business was ready for exporting/importing? What were the key indicators?
We have been importing from when we started our company.
4. Can you share some tips for finding and researching international markets for export, or international suppliers for import? Where did you find your best leads?
We visited various business expos which really helped us to connect to clients. We also focussed on finding customers simply through doing internet searches.
5. What was your biggest initial fear or concern about exporting/importing, and how did you address it?
Our biggest concern around importing and exporting were the different compliance issues in the various countries. You need to learn and understand how each country operates in order to meet their compliance requirements.
6. Reflecting on your experience, are there any aspects you would approach differently now?
Looking back, it would have been helpful to focus on being properly compliant before starting our operations.
7. Did you encounter any unexpected obstacles, and how did you adapt?
Our main obstacle we faced was our compliance, and we overcame this by focussing on understanding different requirements in different countries.
8. Did you attend trade shows or participate in international business development programs? If so, can you mention any that were helpful?
I have attended several trade shows.
9. What advice do you have for aspiring exporters or importers in South Africa?
The main advice we would give for anyone considering importing and exporting is to sort out all your compliance issues first.
