This compact course runs from 09h00 to 16h00 and deals with the mechanics of Import trade, covering risks, costs and tasks.
The course addresses the responsibility the Importer and their service providers from the points of Incoterms handover and the responsibility for payment.
What are the main concerns of the importer and what is the order of importance, in other words, what are the deal-breakers?
- What are Exchange Rates and why is it so very important for the Importer to understand?
- Why is Pre-shipment inspection so important for the Importer?
- How do we create a simple but sound contract without the involvement of the legal fraternity?
Specific attention is paid to;
Basics of law and contracts;
The Proforma Invoice and the formation of the contract;
The Law of Agency – Clearing and Forwarding Agents;
The various transport documents;
Insurance, cargo and currency;
Import Clearing and Forwarding Instructions;
…and the last thing on the seller’s mind, which must be the first thing of the buyer’s mind, knowing exactly what you want and when you want it.
The suitable delegate does not need to have a strong understanding of Import Trade as everything will be well-explained with supporting documents.
The course fees include EXIT Import Manual and an electronic copy of all the presentation material.

Jim Merrington is a well-known presenter and speaker in the freight and logistics industry, bringing over 40-years’ experience to his material.
Originally a lecturer for the Maritime Institute in Cape Town, Jim went on to found the School of Shipping there, before opening Export and Import Training (“EXIT”) in Johannesburg.
With a specific emphasis on Customs compliance Jim presents and consults on a wide-range of trade-related topics both for EXIT, and as a guest-speaker for other service-providers to the International Trade industry.
